Best practices for stable streams
A short checklist for stable streams on IRL.com.de – ingest, codec, buffer, security and fair use. Deeper topics link to the dedicated guides.
Choose ingest
Codec & quality
- Recommended: H.265 (HEVC) – better quality at the same bitrate than H.264
- Use H.264 / x264 only when performance or the destination requires it
- Enhanced RTMP for HEVC/AV1 only when encoder and path support it
SRT buffer
- OBS (when using SRT): about 500 ms max
- Mobile apps: often 1,000–2,000 ms depending on the network
- Sensible ceiling: about 2,500 ms (around 4× RTT)
Security & operations
- Keep the stream key secret; on leak, recreate the stream
- On incidents, check status.irl.com.de first
- Read dashboard metrics: statistics guide
Fair use
The service is free – please use it fairly. Elevated bitrate is fine while capacity allows. Permanently running automated streams without prior agreement are not permitted. Limits for streams, players and push targets are shown in the panel.
